Duane was born on July 18, 1948, in Algona, IA to Richard and Katherine (Peterson) McKenna. He grew up in Livermore, IA and attended school at Bishop-Garrigan High School. He was united in marriage to Charlene Wiseman for 30 years until they divorced in 2006. Duane re-married in 2007 to Joyce Springs until her death in 2023. Duane enjoyed going to the casino, gambling, fishing and traveling. He was known for his auto salvage and scrapping business. His famous quote was “I’m in the iron and steel business, my wife does the ironing and I do the steeling”. He was a one-of-a-kind guy, known for being a bit of an outlaw, or a gypsy with a purpose. He traveled and lived all over the country from the Midwest to Out West. He and Joyce lived in Arizona until her passing, Duane’s wish was always to return home to Iowa.

Duane is survived by his children Duane McKenna Jr. of Escondido, CA, Douglas McKenna of San Manuel, AZ and Kristi (Steve) McKenna-Rabe of Rockwell City, IA; and Clint Besaw who he considered a son; 5 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; his step-mother Carol McKenna of Livermore, IA; his siblings Rick, Jodi, Cindy and Dan along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce; his parents Richard and Katherine and his siblings Karen Schoon and Tom and Tami McKenna.
